Haa Alifu Atoll has only been open to tourism since 2005 and as a result, it offers an unspoilt and exclusive setting. The Lhaviyani atoll, also known as Faadhippolhu, lies north of Male. It is just 35 kms long and 37 kms wide and in spite of being smaller than the other atolls, it is made up of no less than 50 islands. South Male Atoll is a part of the greater Kaafu Atoll with the deep Vaadhu Kandu channel separating it from the North Male Atoll. South Male Atoll contains 22 islands, nearly all situated on its eastern fringes. The majority of the islands are scarcely higher than two metres above sea level and are covered with intense tropical vegetation, interspersed with soaring coconut palms surrounded by beaches of pure white sand. A local delicacy is spiny-backed lobster, which features on menus around the atoll.
