South Male Atoll is a part of the greater Kaafu Atoll with the deep Vaadhu Kandu channel separating it from the North Male Atoll. South Male Atoll contains 22 islands, nearly all situated on its eastern fringes. The majority of the islands are scarcely higher than two metres above sea level and are covered with intense tropical vegetation, interspersed with soaring coconut palms surrounded by beaches of pure white sand. A local delicacy is spiny-backed lobster, which features on menus around the atoll.
