Tulum is the only Mayan city that overlooks the turquioise waters of the Mexican Caribbean. It is thought to be the most beautiful of all the Yucatan's ruins, even though architecturally it is less important that the other great cities of the peninsula. The name Tullum means walled city and as expected, the city is surrounded by walls on its three other sides. Tullum encompases a temple complex and the sacred cenote. The main pyramid, El Castillo sits on a 10 metre cliff with an impressive view of the ocean. The pyramid is also alligned to a natural break in the Palancer reef and functioned as a lighthouse for Mayan boats. The Temple of the Fresoes has one of the rare surviving examples of Maya printing showing divinities, serpents and sacred offerings, all in blue green on a black wall.

There is a large shopping market at the entrance to the site for visitors to buy gifts and souvenirs. The beautiful and seemingly endless white sand beaches of Tulum, lie to the south of the ruins, with palapa restaurants serving authentic Mexican or Internatonal faye. The modern village of Tulum is well equipped with shops, inexpensive restaurants and other conveniences for visitors. Akumal, meanings "Place of the Turtles" in Mayan, the southern most resorts on the Mayan Riviera, just 65 miles from Cancun. One of the older areas on the coast famous for tranquility and a place where thousands of endangered sea turtles visit from May - October to they their eggs. A host of restaurants and local shops to meander around throughout the day or evening.

Music spills from the many restaurants and bars and there are several late night discos and bars for the night owls. Playacar lies to the southwest of Playa Del Carmen and is a rapidly expanding development for tourists. The area comprises an 18-hole golf course, surrounded by landscaped gardens and exclusive private villas and to the beachside all major resort hotels.The beaches at Playacar are spacious with soft white sand and plenty of loungers and sunshades for those who just want to relax. Amenities are less available outside the hotel complexes but Playacar's visitors can access the main resort of Playa Del Carmen very easily. Excursions from and around Playa Del Carmen are varied. First time visitors to the area will be enthralled by the ancient Mayan Ruins at Chichen Itza, Tulum and Coba, Most other excursions are to nearby eco-centres, all with beaches and most offering snorkelling diving, swimming with dolphins and land based activities such as cycling, kayaking, horse riding and nature trails. Shopping visits to Cancun for a wider selection of goods are also available. Playa Del Carmen still retains its natural beauty and character and offers a quieter and more relaxed holiday destination.
