Located on the island of Providenciales in the Caicos group of islands the North Shore is the main tourist centre for the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Turks and Caicos Islands consist of two main groups of islands, Providenciales, is located in the Caicos island group. Only 8 of the 40 very different islands and cays that make up this British Crown Colony, are inhabited, but all offer a spectacular year round climate, wonderful beaches and excellent snorkelling and diving opportunities. Providenciales, known locally as ‘Provo', is the main tourist centre and features amazing white sand beaches including the beautiful 12 mile long beach at Grace Bay. The north shore of the island has a long coral reef, the most beaches and is home to most of the island’s resorts. Chalk Sound is located towards the south of Providenciales, and features striking turquoise waters and an array of small cays. On the hilltop overlooking Sapodilla Bay, you can find stones engraved by shipwrecked sailors from times past. The south part of the island faces the Caicos Bank, which is a shallow area of mangrove swamp and tidal flats that are home to an abundance of conch and lobster.
